What is a Peer Led Recovery Center?

A Peer Led Recovery Center is a community resource which is open to all concerned with alcohol and drug addiction whether it if for one’s self or loved ones who battle the disease.  It is run by people who are in long term recovery.  It provides a safe, clean and sober location for people in recovery and their families to connect and support each each other in improving their lives.  Many people get confused with a Peer Led Recovery Center and a Treatment Center, however, the two are very different.

A PEER LED RECOVERY CENTER IS NOT:

  • A detox
  • A rehab
  • A Medication Assisted Treatment Center for methadone, suboxone, vivitrol, etc.
  • A sober living facility
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

A PEER LED RECOVERY CENTER IS A RESOURCE CENTER THAT PROVIDES:

  • Peer Mentoring
  • Recovery Coaching
  • Recovery Resource Connection
  • Peer Support Groups and Meetings:
    • AA
    • NA
    • HA
    • SMART Recovery
    • Al-Anon
    • Families Hoping and Coping
  • Community Building
  • Volunteering
  • Family Support Services
  • Workforce Development:
    • resume building
    • job hunting
    • interview skills
    • computer skills
  • Wellness Programs:
    • Yoga
    • Meditation
    • Reiki
    • Healthy Cooking
    • Etc.
  • Sober Lifestyle Activities, Fun & Recreation:
    • Family Fun Nights
    • Dancing
    • Ping Pong
    • Karaoke
    • Hiking groups
    • Surfing groups
    • Skiing groups
    • Painting classes
    • Arts & Crafts
    • Etc.

Research has shown that the need for social support is what really makes the difference.  Peer led support is led by people who have traveled the pathway to recovery and who understand the joy and the challenges of the journey.  Working alongside someone who has a shared experience means that support is credible and sustaining. It is proven to be the most effective approach to substance use recovery.  Research has also shown that this type of environment decreases morbidity rates, improves self-efficacy, lowers incidences of depression, heightens self-esteem, and overall, improves quality of life.  I believe a Peer Led Recovery Center is needed in every town in America!
